A new baby

No ... I'm not pregnant!

But my niece was ... until last week ... when she gave birth to the most delicious little daughter called India. She is a very special baby who will be more loved than most people I know. But of course, that might be my bias talking.

My niece asked for yellows, greys and neutrals. But I couldn't resist a splash of red!

And of course, the baby's name on the back (or the "other front") of the quilt.

All fabrics from my stash, including the scrappy yellow binding.

Already much loved by it's new recipient. Here's some more pics .... just because.

Finished quilt top

A slightly grainy Instagram shot taken with my iphone. But I love it!!

The back of the quilt will have the baby's name on it so I'll have to wait until s/he is born before I can finish this one off. Just a few weeks to go!

When quilts have babies

Often, when I'm making a quilt, I make a LOT of blocks and then arrange them to the design and size I like. This usually means left-over blocks to make little baby quilts with.

So when I made this quilt for Ella's next birthday ...

 

... there were enough blocks left over to make this cute little baby quilt ...

 

(It hasn't been gifted yet so I won't say who it might be for!)

I blogged about this quilt a while ago ...

 

But I haven't yet shown you the new baby ...

 

This one will be sent over to the Bumble Beans Quilt Basics charity organised by the wonderfully talented and generous Victoria.

Quilt Basics provides handmade quilty love to homeless families in the NYC area. It is a wonderful cause and I encourage you to get involved if you can.

Stitching, stitching, stitching!!

A couple of commissions finished this week.

A small quilt for a baby boy called Nathan.
It was a commission from his adult sister who wanted soft blues as the primary colour, and to have Nathan's name appliqued in both English and Hebrew.

The second commission was another custom cushion donation to a local school's annual fundraiser.

With a very professional looking zipper opening thanks to this wonderful tutorial!

Wobots and Wockets

For a new baby boy called ....

The backing is a snuggly flanellette and the request for the binding was satin so he can rub it on his nose for comfort.

It's a fairly small quilt .... 24 inches x 34 inches.

Fabrics purchased at the last Amitie sale. Missed it? There's another one tomorrow!!!!

Have fun shopping. I live vicariously through you, due to my current fabric diet.   :-(

Let your hair hang down!

I haven't been able to stop singing this song while making this quilt for little Edi (rhymes with Evie).
(Those of you who didn't grow up in Australia might not recognise the song but it's an absolute Aussie classic!!)

I chose the Kona solid fabrics using my handy colour card that I won over at Lorraine's place.
Thanks so much Lorraine. I'm sure it will come in handy for many a future shopping trip!!

The front features Heather Ross's 'Princess and the Pea' fabric together with a couple of her other delightful prints.

Also included are some of my other favourite fabric designers including Denyse Schmidt, Anna Maria Horner, Prints Charming, Valori Wells and, of course, Jennifer Paganelli.

I used Jess's binding technique which is the same as Rita's approach up until sewing the binding down on the back.
At that point, Jess flips the quilt over so she can actually see what she's sewing at the back and uses invisible thread in the bobbin.

Friends

I have received some lovely gifts from crafty friends lately.

 

Bec gave me some lovely jewels that her daughter no longer wanted. There are more but Ella has already snapped them up in her treasure boxes. 

Bec actually gave these to me ages ago. Sorry it has taken me so long to post about them Bec.

And Kate heard I might be interested in some vintage sheeting with pinks so she gave me this lovely lot.

Some dear friends of ours had a little baby boy this week. 

(When I say little ... he weighed in at just over 5kg .... that's about 11 pounds .....Hail Caeser!!!)

I made him a strippy quilt

With lots of boyish fabrics featuring dinosaurs, vehicles and animals!!

It has his name on the back .... Ezra Barak (no relation). 

In Hebrew, Barak means 'lightening'.

Stipple quilted all over.

And of course, a matching cushion for the big brother Jake so he doesn't feel left out!!

And speaking of friends ... don't forget my friend Annie's special offer!!
