<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A new (at least for me) concept for pixel quilts. I created a two-color design in <a href="https://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> and then used highly patterned fabrics (instead of my usual Kona solids) in two primary color ways. I think it makes for a more unusual end result. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Many people struggle to see the image but I tell them to stand back and squint and that usually helps. Also tricky is the fact that many people don't know who Harpo is!! If you haven't heard of Harpo Marx before, I suggest that you go and watch some classic footage of him. (Like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMBBhyV3sME" target="_blank">this</a>!) He is a genius at physical comedy and a brilliant musician to boot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Still struggling to see the image?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_UT9Chlv_-Q9PTANOIJxPs3VJi_DG0j_xJ3oNs15ge7ZbgU3TiqndAsavKPhsVRO9j82ONd2SRMhYnFolyy1EatS2XLun9_Ga1XuZVNRC6sX6CTINa-COcQyrA7Y2jet-zMZUj3OyITNE/s1600/harpo-tryptych.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_UT9Chlv_-Q9PTANOIJxPs3VJi_DG0j_xJ3oNs15ge7ZbgU3TiqndAsavKPhsVRO9j82ONd2SRMhYnFolyy1EatS2XLun9_Ga1XuZVNRC6sX6CTINa-COcQyrA7Y2jet-zMZUj3OyITNE/s640/harpo-tryptych.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Does that help?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I'm really enjoying experimenting with different ideas and techniques in these pixel quilts. There are so many possibilities!!<br />
<br />
If you are playing with different pixel quilt ideas, I'd love to see your work. Please send pics!!<br />
<br />
Big stitchy love to you.<br />

I love this quilt and am excited to be sending it (her) to Kiama for exhibition in Australia's only Modern Quilting Show.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the first <a href="http://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> pixel quilt that I have made incorporating half-square triangles (HSTs). They allow me to create smoother, rounder lines which is perfect in a quilt about BUBBLES!!!</div>

This is tricky because the higher the detail in a small quilt, the smaller the little pieces. It gets to a point where the pieces are simply too small to sew.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYsCmF0HNZK729S08FLRGgauOcKn4Omdms5K1Df6L5GH9CAGxzm8fUOUB-k1t8vq5m3o8NaCMskIIDsweM3r1H6Dfl7L-B9kz6FR-ldIutldv-CwQ1yOpxR2Q4ysy8g7pWa6Porrt0mFoE/s1600/thumb_IMG_4811_1024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYsCmF0HNZK729S08FLRGgauOcKn4Omdms5K1Df6L5GH9CAGxzm8fUOUB-k1t8vq5m3o8NaCMskIIDsweM3r1H6Dfl7L-B9kz6FR-ldIutldv-CwQ1yOpxR2Q4ysy8g7pWa6Porrt0mFoE/s640/thumb_IMG_4811_1024.jpg" width="628" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
But they can be stuck!! A-ha!! I came across a method called Fabric Mosaic via FaceBook (as you do) when I befriended a woman called Robyn Taylor who makes small pixelated fabric wall hangings using this method. She also teaches this method. Google her!!<br />
<br />
After numerous discussions with Robyn and some of Dan's magic software creations, I began a trial piece. A portrait of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
I began by printing the design onto some printable fabric sheets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnGbXKIgtWqwRm3qsxBqxHByHKUZSJjJT5Y2PFBdApg_8q1e35Fs6sss3l9aM7AXRZmB_7IPL1iiESHNYbkFS-c6PaTMylD7eo2yLjuUty3SB9_t-DJWWklpM6kQu99UNZuYTojOwUodmI/s1600/frida-complete.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnGbXKIgtWqwRm3qsxBqxHByHKUZSJjJT5Y2PFBdApg_8q1e35Fs6sss3l9aM7AXRZmB_7IPL1iiESHNYbkFS-c6PaTMylD7eo2yLjuUty3SB9_t-DJWWklpM6kQu99UNZuYTojOwUodmI/s640/frida-complete.png" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then started adding color by color:</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhxe9TT5Fg5djCtHfXPoKlaPo8TIVG_zu_tJOrWXwOFhB0ykU0sloNybDvtnyeOzRimhnUcdK3AUbyuyjuPWKRT38j_NKN-XyceThrPrNHRcuEohtk0nY_lY1mnOw93-A_52NcBb5f-063/s1600/Frida+part+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhxe9TT5Fg5djCtHfXPoKlaPo8TIVG_zu_tJOrWXwOFhB0ykU0sloNybDvtnyeOzRimhnUcdK3AUbyuyjuPWKRT38j_NKN-XyceThrPrNHRcuEohtk0nY_lY1mnOw93-A_52NcBb5f-063/s640/Frida+part+1.jpg" width="640" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIlowVXon35d08KNNYdOuSCHvbHoMSGJG52G8KLCQBli2Uj1W1WkJF636LwaMW0t-uDWvWHi53bBGvvqVmLjfOqSK3eL2vOf2oEI7sj8CL3yBux-bdAPO8is0CJauJU5WPrUgEBYmE7SZF/s1600/Frida+part+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIlowVXon35d08KNNYdOuSCHvbHoMSGJG52G8KLCQBli2Uj1W1WkJF636LwaMW0t-uDWvWHi53bBGvvqVmLjfOqSK3eL2vOf2oEI7sj8CL3yBux-bdAPO8is0CJauJU5WPrUgEBYmE7SZF/s640/Frida+part+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I added color by ironing fusible interfacing onto each color and then cutting out the requisite shapes, turning each little piece into a 'sticker' that I could stick onto my printed sheets. It was a lot of fun!!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dan had some fun too ... turning the process into an animated video ....... Fridamation:<br />
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="650" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JyLiilQglMU" width="650"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
And here she is, happily quilted, bordered, bound and hanging in my sewing room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjck1W2acgbQ4LW34YFfPgzJ7sNMrzdcKrbk2C1KzdRGi6MFOkOcaaZOFClEBmo0SnzjYbsx3n3i2waBsod37P5Dxzf35Z4GkyTlTSgzF4lB0297nlBPrxF3_selOKOIaDy7yWg4CPYpfvr/s1600/thumb_IMG_4812_1024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjck1W2acgbQ4LW34YFfPgzJ7sNMrzdcKrbk2C1KzdRGi6MFOkOcaaZOFClEBmo0SnzjYbsx3n3i2waBsod37P5Dxzf35Z4GkyTlTSgzF4lB0297nlBPrxF3_selOKOIaDy7yWg4CPYpfvr/s640/thumb_IMG_4812_1024.jpg" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
The central part of the quilt measures 15" x 19". With the black borders, it comes to 26" x 30".<br />
<br />
I'm so excited about this new approach. Already planning my next one!<br />
<br />

So much has happened since my last post that it's hard to know where to start.<br />
<br />
I think for this blog post I'll show you some of the quilts that I have loved seeing of late. I'm sure you will have seen many of them in other people's posts .... people who actually post regularly and when the news is still current :P<br />

Many people I had corresponded with online, people who had made <a href="http://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> quilts, so many people I have admired over the years!!<br />
<br />
WARNING: there will be a LOT of photos in this blog post and I will be in most of them :P<br />
So if you have had enough of seeing me and my pink hair, just focus on the OTHER gorgeous people in the pics ;-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCUh4QFYPD_0KM0jlq3BZTqfilSpQWVZhT65-oZB5-hd1gOshvbn9RvMc1YI19VIW7IZTN1uqVbbOoxwExIHt2kWkbpl4CbFYcgDUBZ7pitN2vkNb0tVtbecbLkYxmF5sVVaQKirpYblKC/s1600/aussies+at+quiltcon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCUh4QFYPD_0KM0jlq3BZTqfilSpQWVZhT65-oZB5-hd1gOshvbn9RvMc1YI19VIW7IZTN1uqVbbOoxwExIHt2kWkbpl4CbFYcgDUBZ7pitN2vkNb0tVtbecbLkYxmF5sVVaQKirpYblKC/s1600/aussies+at+quiltcon.jpg" height="346" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First up, the Aussies!! In the lead up to QuiltCon, I joined a FaceBook group called "Aussie QuiltCon Contingent". Such a gorgeous and supportive group of women. Some old friends, some new. We shared our travel plans, our excitement and of course much silliness! What a crazy bunch travelling to the other side of the globe to play with quilts and fabric!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is most of the group (there were even more but some couldn't make it that night) from Australia and a few New Zealanders too. We met for dinner the night before QuiltCon started and had a fabulous time getting to know each other in the flesh!! The restaurant staff were a little overwhelmed by us all but handled the group with great class!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During the show I was overwhelmed by offers from this crazy group to help with the stall, bring us food and drink, cover for me while I snuck off to a lecture (thanks <a href="http://www.lorenauriarte.com/" target="_blank">Lorena</a>)! I am so thankful to be part of such a wonderful and generous Aussie quilting community.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another FaceBook group I have joined is called <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/1382986385304572/?fref=ts" target="_blank">QDAD</a> (Quilt Design A Day). Another creative online community dedicated to pushing the boundaries of modern quilt design via daily practice. Group members (there are over 700 now) who were also at QuiltCon got together for a group dinner which was also a heap of fun!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So now, I thought I'd introduce you to some of the YouPatch quilt makers we met at the show ....</div>

They were so generous with their time, helping us out at daily demonstrations and even handing out YouPatch cards on the show floor. If you ever get to Vancouver, be sure to look these guys up! I certainly will!!</div>

I'm a tad late in posting about <a href="http://www.quiltcon.com/" target="_blank">QuiltCon</a> as we didn't get home to Melbourne until the 28th Feb and since then I have been suffering jet lag, a nasty head cold and a severe case of procrastination-itis!<br />
<br />
So in this first blog post, I'll be mainly showing you our <a href="http://www.quiltcon.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> booth. We were so proud of our booth that packed away into a suitcase! But more about that later.<br />
<br />
In future posts, I'll be talking bout the people of QuiltCon, the city of Austin and, of course, all the gorgeous quilts!!! I'll also be showing you our post-Austin visit to Los Angeles where we got to hang out with a bunch of fabulous people and soak up the winter sunshine.<br />
<br />
But first, our journey to Austin ..... didn't go exactly to plan!<br />

Here I am at Los Angeles Airport (LAX) with Dan and the lovely <a href="http://jenkingwelldesigns.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Jen Kingwell</a>. We had travelled together on a 15 hour flight from Melbourne expecting a couple of hours wait before boarding a flight to Austin. Unfortunately, our flight was delayed and delayed and delayed. This photo was taken after waiting for nine hours in the terminal only to be told that our flight would now be leaving at 5am TOMORROW and that we would be staying in Los Angeles overnight. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm stunned that we are all still smiling in this pic! But I guess we had to or we would have been crying :P </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a 24 hour delay (and plenty more not-so-delightful mishaps from American Airlines. Grumble, grumble!) we finally arrived in Austin and even found our luggage!! It was great having Jen for company (as well as Dan of course) as it made the LOOOONG journey so much more bearable. Thanks Jen!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So our original plan had been to arrive in Austin on Monday and spend the rest of the day recovering and sleeping before a big day of shopping for the booth on Tuesday. BUT, due to our delay, we arrived lunchtime Tuesday and had to head straight out to get the shopping done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank goodness for wonderful Aussie friends with a car!!! Sheridan (who's blog 'Chalet Girl' seems to have disappeared.... but she can be found happily stitching away with the <a href="https://gwsmodernquiltguild.wordpress.com/about/" target="_blank">GWS MGQ</a>) and <a href="http://www.lorenauriarte.com/" target="_blank">Lorena</a> very kindly helped us shlep from store to store so we could buy a computer screen, hanging rods for our quilts, folding chairs and even candy bowls with candy to fill them!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wednesday was set up day at the show.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We arrived Wednesday morning to find our booth (that we had requested to be draped with black) was actually draped with grey but the good folk at the <a href="http://www.austinconventioncenter.com/" target="_blank">Austin Convention Centre</a> were great and quickly helped to transform our space to a little black cave (just the way I like it!!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was a frenzy of activity as other vendors and exhibitors were building their booths from large crates that had been shipped in to the venue. All we had was a suitcase full of quilts (and stuff) and whatever we had purchased on our shopping trip the day before.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Luckily, our booth came together very quickly and easily!</div>

Stacey also had a quilt in the quilt show. It is a companion piece to this one. It is of Jared Padalecki who plays Sam Winchester. I'll show you that one when I do a post about all the quilts in the show!!</div>

<br />
I started with this pixelated image:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinyxYuFQz6juFaHtIpXyhefMhSrO3TyZADnSaLTiIAhzdZitNHBPYDk6jd9198IxNCxWoHj-NAtCq53tXwj8mQEMc5gWyhlNmVNjulA4TT72I5tjfx4v4IIf84guI0l9Irosb4ic5EDghv/s1600/pixelated+audrey.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinyxYuFQz6juFaHtIpXyhefMhSrO3TyZADnSaLTiIAhzdZitNHBPYDk6jd9198IxNCxWoHj-NAtCq53tXwj8mQEMc5gWyhlNmVNjulA4TT72I5tjfx4v4IIf84guI0l9Irosb4ic5EDghv/s1600/pixelated+audrey.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using <a href="https://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a>, I generated a pattern with just over 2000 pieces and, over the course of about 50 hours, I made the quilt top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next challenging issue was the quilting. I knew that I had neither the time (before <a href="http://www.quiltcon.com/" target="_blank">QuiltCon</a>) or the capacity to quilt this quilt. I ended up deciding to use professional quilting services. I was unable to find anyone who would be willing to treat this project as an art quilt and to quilt in and around the facial features and structural contours. So I decided to keep it simple and asked for vertical lines, unevenly spaced.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's what I got back .... exactly what I asked for:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEgcd4TFB2OGeG5p1s7SOsbnvOegC1BgfeRM4E4ARRhJZ76Y3utXZzeq6TY86OUJl0_F23ehpXIJYuPqq6H73d5Od86ylL9mgPfZcvBire5ZV7yWj67idob5sTFEgGz0P7imoG2YEGY5Ga/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEgcd4TFB2OGeG5p1s7SOsbnvOegC1BgfeRM4E4ARRhJZ76Y3utXZzeq6TY86OUJl0_F23ehpXIJYuPqq6H73d5Od86ylL9mgPfZcvBire5ZV7yWj67idob5sTFEgGz0P7imoG2YEGY5Ga/s1600/photo+1.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It just wasn't right. She looked too ... well .... lined! I knew I had to unpick the quilting and go back for another quilting design.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In order to reduce the risk of getting another quilting design that looked wrong, my clever husband whipped up some preview options:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhABXaZJ-VbicfctzzvngntZJLsV8TtBx73N7BbJGEXDyTp1UCaDLQLF7VUCTRyE4HW5fHYmbfyJVtSMca3OtS5APoxP10NLx6_YI7NhbizopbXw_1UfqP6QKkfKd7Fwg1uaYJPoKMFi5ub/s1600/audrey-comparison.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhABXaZJ-VbicfctzzvngntZJLsV8TtBx73N7BbJGEXDyTp1UCaDLQLF7VUCTRyE4HW5fHYmbfyJVtSMca3OtS5APoxP10NLx6_YI7NhbizopbXw_1UfqP6QKkfKd7Fwg1uaYJPoKMFi5ub/s1600/audrey-comparison.png" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to go with the Baptist Fans design (bottom right). It felt softer and was more likely to NOT emphasise my somewhat imperfect piecing skills.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's the preview:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdcE-2SxvnDAYkleMnEkJ0y3CIL7x7tOLKW4O9-ECkbyphbgF0yTFX6VHaz6wVr6p9pkba2huKm6bi9GSQSJyzN-2HiE2SO_hxm0K-a2VY4M5-4a0AUgZXC7kiZwHWYECRo7knduGFyxWA/s1600/audrey-baptist-fans.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdcE-2SxvnDAYkleMnEkJ0y3CIL7x7tOLKW4O9-ECkbyphbgF0yTFX6VHaz6wVr6p9pkba2huKm6bi9GSQSJyzN-2HiE2SO_hxm0K-a2VY4M5-4a0AUgZXC7kiZwHWYECRo7knduGFyxWA/s1600/audrey-baptist-fans.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's what I got:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyeOwf-y4lbb1Y88TvQEFHl7J44-PA8u2hseM2NomOctp0ha0u3MpM-_RHWXzMPNaksCmUg1iEO8C_lZI9ZSTjUchqWUG5nrWE9iAy-g8YHIWRmJLiJqPFMW6T6QckXgavJaTq0SjKremI/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyeOwf-y4lbb1Y88TvQEFHl7J44-PA8u2hseM2NomOctp0ha0u3MpM-_RHWXzMPNaksCmUg1iEO8C_lZI9ZSTjUchqWUG5nrWE9iAy-g8YHIWRmJLiJqPFMW6T6QckXgavJaTq0SjKremI/s1600/photo+2.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
SO much better!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next big decision to make was the binding fabric. Back to Dan and his awesome preview skills:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVpouN3Epcw4byQiMKCIuMf8S2c8WJ7h0qU_Vyxw5wDDaG3cDOjIVJQbkYzVZPcEOSTNzIsIiBjzzK2uxy1W5P0ThSiNT5rYg13NRl5LDLiNl234-6gO34V0ndWxKXTxuFoDsRTIW9lu1-/s1600/audrey-binding-comparison.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVpouN3Epcw4byQiMKCIuMf8S2c8WJ7h0qU_Vyxw5wDDaG3cDOjIVJQbkYzVZPcEOSTNzIsIiBjzzK2uxy1W5P0ThSiNT5rYg13NRl5LDLiNl234-6gO34V0ndWxKXTxuFoDsRTIW9lu1-/s1600/audrey-binding-comparison.png" height="432" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went with the red option to bring out the red in her lips.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And now she is finally finished!!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was only one real choice in terms of where to photograph her. ....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Such a relief to finish this one. I'm so happy with the end result and can't wait to show her off in Austin next month.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have you ever had to unpick your quilting?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Would you love to be able to preview a quilting design or binding choice?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd love to know!!</div>

Happy stitching to you.</div>

Here is the first pixel quilt I've made that incorporates triangles:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg2X8UvWuDVtMemV0JqA7uCewl07g5RWLseyORR1D-M_s-HOl3IBJJeiEnSg5rtZQHlkPaCWlqSzyOZMe3_2hDH20fNjInmz8RpFItDL0-yCe_dRo44c0Icd-nbUm_krp-tViWhJnx8_0c/s1600/DSC_0227.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg2X8UvWuDVtMemV0JqA7uCewl07g5RWLseyORR1D-M_s-HOl3IBJJeiEnSg5rtZQHlkPaCWlqSzyOZMe3_2hDH20fNjInmz8RpFItDL0-yCe_dRo44c0Icd-nbUm_krp-tViWhJnx8_0c/s1600/DSC_0227.JPG" height="446" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The original image was a pic I took about a year ago of my daughter Ella blowing bubbles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rather than go with my usual bright solid fabrics, I wanted to incorporate a palette that was a little different so I asked my dear friend <a href="http://instagram.com/lululollylegs" target="_blank">Louise</a> (who usually goes for a softer palette than I do) to select the fabrics for me. Not only did she select something gorgeous and a little different, she went with textured fabrics.... all purchased from <a href="http://www.amitie.com.au/" target="_blank">Amitie</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-kPmmuiwPrwtKF7uOLTo4qpBodYZRCelWj75aQcMm8j_RHY4Y8RneZt149EWVxgJpLosBcp90DYlgO75gXt2KpapYA66NPSGX_ANpkS88LOEv99nSCtjo_ur0Pe2NmNjXxJe35Bka0vL5/s1600/photo+(40).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-kPmmuiwPrwtKF7uOLTo4qpBodYZRCelWj75aQcMm8j_RHY4Y8RneZt149EWVxgJpLosBcp90DYlgO75gXt2KpapYA66NPSGX_ANpkS88LOEv99nSCtjo_ur0Pe2NmNjXxJe35Bka0vL5/s1600/photo+(40).JPG" height="640" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From L-R: Robert Kaufman dot in pink, Quartet Collection by Faye Burgos for Marcus Fabrics, Zenith by P&B Textiles, Robert Kaufman quilters linen in silver, Robert Kaufman quilters linen in platinum.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The piecing was certainly more fiddly with the smallest HSTs measuring 1 inch (sewn). But it was so worthwhile. I am really happy with the end result.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Machine quilted by the lovely Kylie Cannon (who can be contacted via <a href="http://www.amitie.com.au/" target="_blank">Amitie</a>) with some added pink hand-quilting (by ME!) on the blown bubbles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And just because I had fun photographing this quilt, here's another shot in a different location:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We haven't yet incorporated the HST option into the <a href="https://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> website but if you are busting to do a HST pixel quilt, get in touch and we'll see what we can do!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy stitching to you all!!</div>

<a href="https://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> has, until now, provided pixel quilt patterns using only squares and rectangles as component pieces. We have recently been dabbling with the idea of adding half-square-triangles (HST's) to improve the capacity for creating smoother curved and diagonal lines.</div>
<div style="background-color: white;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white;">
My clever husband <a href="https://twitter.com/agilejitsu" target="_blank">Dan Prager</a> (the brain power behind this idea) has written about it in his <a href="http://agile-jitsu.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/adding-triangles-to-youpatch.html" target="_blank">blog post</a> and we have re-published it here ...</div>

<br />
Following <a href="http://agile-jitsu.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/my-talk-at-racketcon-2014.html">my talk</a> at RacketCon 2014 a few participants expressed interest in getting a quilt based on the <a href="http://racket-lang.org/">Racket programming language</a> logo (right).<br />
<br />
Since I used Racket extensively both in inventing and developing YouPatch (<a href="http://www.youpatch.com/">www.youpatch.com</a>) I thought it would be a nice gesture to make a free quilt design available to members of the Racket community.<br />
<br />
However, just running the Racket logo through the YouPatch process (as it stood) made for an unsatisfactory result on two fronts:<br />

<li>YouPatch's aggregation algorithm combines neighboring squares of the same color into larger pieces to reduce the amount of cutting and sewing— a key feature. Unfortunately it did badly in a few cases (especially so on simple logos like this) because it was based on the somewhat simplistic idea of chopping each block repeatedly into quarters. By looking at the original design you can probably see several places where neighboring pieces should have been combined.</li>
</ol>
<div>
So I improved the aggregating algorithm, achieving typically a reduction of 20% in the total number of pieces. [There's a trade-off here against the number of distinct shapes involved. I could get 30%, but we decided to restrict shape dimensions to reduce confusion during construction.]</div>

Racketeers, if you'd like this design free-of-charge, let me know and I'll generate and send you the pdf with all the instructions. You'll still need to buy the fabric and find a friendly quilter. [Try your local modern quilt guild if you don't know one.] </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let me know what size you'd like: </div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Small wall hanging: 32" x 32"</li>
<li>Medium wall hanging: 48" x 48"</li>
<li>Double bed or lap quilt for the couch: 64" x 64"</li>
<li>Queen bed: 80" x 80"</li>
</ol>
</div>
<div>
Now, in case you prefer another programming language to Racket, here's a sample of what happens to the logos of some other awesome languages that also have a liking for the greek letter lambda (λ):</div>

<div>
At the time of writing the triangle-generating technology has not been built into YouPatch's self-serve features, nor have we finalized pricing.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think you can see that this facility makes a big difference to logo-style pixelation (simple design, few colors, low-ish resolution), and of course it can be used for non-programming language logos! ;-)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It also can produce interesting arty effects on photographs. Here's the first pixel quilt featuring half-square triangles that we've actually made, featuring my daughter blowing bubbles:<br />

2014 was a super busy crafty year with the launch of <a href="http://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> in February.<br />
<br />
Loads of pixel projects and quilts for friends and family.<br />
<br />
Thank you to everyone who helped to make YouPatch a wonderful experience and to everyone who made my 2014 interesting, fabulous, challenging and creative.<br />
<br />
Happy new year!! I hope it's s stitchy one!<br />

<br />
In day-to-day life, this doesn't always feel like a reality. Sibling squabbles and childish selfishness can get in the way of ideals and dreams.<br />
<br />
So, we endeavour to do good things with the kids, in very overt ways, so they can see how good it feels to do good for others.<br />
<br />
Our kids get a generous weekly allowance but they don't get to spend it all. Some they have to put aside for savings and some they put aside for charity or (as it is known in this house) <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tzedakah" target="_blank">Tzedakah</a>. In past years, we have taken the saved up Tzedakah and the children have chosen a large toy to place under the charity Christmas tree at our local department store. Their gifts have gone to children their own age who otherwise might not have received a gift at Christmas time.<br />
<br />
This year, we did things a little differently. Jake expressed a desire to do something for the homeless and to be able to give a gift in person, rather than leave an anonymous gift. He wanted to make a personal connection.<br />
<br />
So, inspired projects like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dhVQk96-9Q" target="_blank">this one</a>, we took the children's Tzedakah money (and some of ours also) and we bought five backpacks and went shopping for useful and nice things to put inside.<br />

So <a href="https://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> and Robert Kaufman have become firm friends since our launch earlier this year.<br />
<br />
So when we were approached by the good people at Robert Kaufman to collaborate on a pixel pattern project, we were delighted to get involved.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/" target="_blank">Robert Kaufman</a> have a new range of brush stroke fabrics that were created using actual scans of Vincent Van Gogh's brush strokes. How cool!!! So what better image to use in a quilt pattern than the artist himself!<br />
<br />
This was our first pattern using non-solid fabrics so presented a bit of a technical challenge but decided we were up to the task and created this pattern for a pixel quilt:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH12lgeiurIG5ahBmrbDIGT8HbFNq_q_PRBoLF-IZ1pD5s8lFDkAjDsAVC20K8rivGk3mJCz9_qiVbLjz7RR3FrM23P-YOXGSeL9KNdas1c295KztdFHWnNcHzf6uRKI3A4qb3uq-FjHEl/s1600/vincent-textured.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH12lgeiurIG5ahBmrbDIGT8HbFNq_q_PRBoLF-IZ1pD5s8lFDkAjDsAVC20K8rivGk3mJCz9_qiVbLjz7RR3FrM23P-YOXGSeL9KNdas1c295KztdFHWnNcHzf6uRKI3A4qb3uq-FjHEl/s1600/vincent-textured.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern is available <a href="https://www.youpatch.com/vincent" target="_blank">here</a> as a free download. You can find out more about this fabric range <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/quilting/quilts_patterns/vincent/" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I've been sewing some teeny tiny pixels together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOgdZhKKuQGTEoEbntQjK2ytSYJT_JQwm0_X1IkWbEpwGNfHoFITbrFDBXHSfZLp2AGopyem3T9YtDh5rFIuLb9pNv8jtDMrrqg3EKReH6-Exuyb40pSauHzA_E7PwA0ojvAV2rzUjpfUR/s1600/Audrey+eye.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOgdZhKKuQGTEoEbntQjK2ytSYJT_JQwm0_X1IkWbEpwGNfHoFITbrFDBXHSfZLp2AGopyem3T9YtDh5rFIuLb9pNv8jtDMrrqg3EKReH6-Exuyb40pSauHzA_E7PwA0ojvAV2rzUjpfUR/s1600/Audrey+eye.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The smallest 'pixels' are 3/4 inch so fairly fiddly. I've completed 40 blocks out of 100. (What you can see in this pic is about 6 blocks).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It will be a while before this baby is finished so I'll try to pop by here regularly to show some progress pics.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
See ya later stitchy people!!</div>

Together with over 100 amazing sponsors, I managed to raise over $6000 for the <a href="http://www.leukaemia.org.au/" target="_blank">Leukaemia Foundation of Australia</a>. And I donated my actual hair to the <a href="http://www.aaaf.org.au/" target="_blank">Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation</a>. I felt proud!!<br />
<br />
Here's what my day looked like ....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It feels good to have done something positive in a global environment where so much of the news is negative ... horrific even!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I just need to keep my head warm until Melbourne's weather decides to be hot again.</div>
<br />
Sending positive thoughts and wishes to you and yours.<br />

One of his favorite techniques is lino cutting and he has recently produced a number of stunning lino cut prints with an Australian theme.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, we have almost no wall space left in our house so I felt unable to buy any of his prints as I had nowhere to display them. So you can imagine how excited I was when he revealed that he would be printing his designs onto fabric to make into cushions.<br />
<br />
We have new couches at our place that have been screaming out for some new cushions. Everything fell perfectly into place.<br />

<br />
But my niece was ... until last week ... when she gave birth to the most delicious little daughter called India. She is a very special baby who will be more loved than most people I know. But of course, that might be my bias talking.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My niece asked for yellows, greys and neutrals. But I couldn't resist a splash of red!</div>

I created this abstract pixel pattern from a picture of autumn leaves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnQ1Zkq2pe5o1PE4NL3aakCiZUoS0O6lIB8d6W23pRFgAGYl2m5OiXKDlvdO94dpM-qhpPRpeab_IaM7epdJYUZrvTWGqK2ZQbNiVjIlhTnV2hmhjZI-qlBDnpyGOq3KJU0AqV8-0exVi7/s1600/Andi+Herman+quilt+full.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnQ1Zkq2pe5o1PE4NL3aakCiZUoS0O6lIB8d6W23pRFgAGYl2m5OiXKDlvdO94dpM-qhpPRpeab_IaM7epdJYUZrvTWGqK2ZQbNiVjIlhTnV2hmhjZI-qlBDnpyGOq3KJU0AqV8-0exVi7/s1600/Andi+Herman+quilt+full.jpg" height="588" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using <a href="https://www.youpatch.com/" target="_blank">YouPatch</a> I chose the lowest level of detail and dropped the colors down to 5. Then I selected my own color palette and voila .... this was the result!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMsSF3c_OJySjyuGDyin4iFfcvbvSlMVvF6q2sr7qaisbtC-OMO6rZfwCPYcnO8XCvvygNiCPa84aUHdYhMifcZ6M7OktUlPvyj8CQmttwG5MPOD6jGeo8paAEiRVPxPkpVCZLV_cOV2zK/s1600/Andi+Herman+quilt+detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMsSF3c_OJySjyuGDyin4iFfcvbvSlMVvF6q2sr7qaisbtC-OMO6rZfwCPYcnO8XCvvygNiCPa84aUHdYhMifcZ6M7OktUlPvyj8CQmttwG5MPOD6jGeo8paAEiRVPxPkpVCZLV_cOV2zK/s1600/Andi+Herman+quilt+detail.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the quilting I went with an off-centre spiral, augmented with some fun squiggles and swirls.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And for the backing, I chose this stunning fabric that I bought at <a href="http://www.amitie.com.au/" target="_blank">Amitie Textiles</a>.</div>
