Self portraits

I'm very excited about today's finish.

I've been working with the children in Ella's class to create a class quilt.  They are all about 5 or 6 years old and are in their first year of school. (In Victoria, we call it 'Prep').

Prep quilt - detail

Each child was given a white fabric square with a smaller square drawn on (so I would have some seam allowance) and a selection of fabric markers.

I worked with them in small groups and told them to draw a picture of themselves with some things they liked.

Prep quilt - front

I am so thrilled with the result. I'm pretty sure they (and their teacher) will be too.

The back is a fun colourful fabric piece from IKEA.

Prep quilt - back

I've finished it off with a label and tied it all up with a pretty ribbon ... ready to be given on Monday morning!

Prep quilt - folded

I hope you've done something satisfying today too.

Flannelly softness

I love flannel for babies!
So soft and comforting.

The fabrics used are Valori Wells' Urban Flannels line which I purchased over a year ago and haven't had the perfect project to use it for ... until today.

This flannel cushion is for a new baby girl.
A commission from my in-laws!!

Thanks guys!!!

Gifts

Lots of gifts made by me recently:

Bunting to match Jonah's quilt:

Another softie using one of Karen's panels, this time for little Roni:

A soft wrap for a new baby born today (inspired by a beautiful soft wrap I spied around this delicious little person):

A bag made for a little girl turning 5. She's having a 'Baking Party':

And that same little girl's mum has a birthday in the same week and always misses out on celebrating her birthday so I made her a luscious soft scarf using my latest favourite fabrics:

And to top it all off, I received a thankyou note from Tina for her PIF gift.
It is a beautifully handmade fabric postcard:

Handmade gifts are always the best.

Don't you think?

Labels

Lots of people have been asking where I got my labels printed.

A lovely mum from our kinder called Lindy Barda works for Paxar / Avery Dennison

If you are in Melbourne, I can recommend you do what I did and go in and meet Lindy to see the huge range of options:
  • printed or woven
  • folded edges or fused edges
  • damask weave or another kind of weave
  • choices, choices, choices
It's good to see actual samples of all the different options to make a choice.
(Mine are damask weave with fused edges).

Lindy's contact details are: 0411699314 or lindy@paxar.com.au

Thanks for all the lovely comments about them.

PS Forgot to mention that a minimum order is 5000 labels but I got 1000 each of the 5 different colourways.
Won't be buying labels again anytime soon!!!

Are you getting sick of these yet?

It seems that the majority of current orders (business-wise) are for smaller pieces like this matzah cover for passover (which starts next week).

This one is actually for my dentist (bless her) who has a neutral coloured dining room with moss green chairs. Her table is usually set with white and silver. I hope this combination works for her.

The back has some extra pockets built in to hold 3 pieces of matzah.

And if you look closely, you'll see one of my new labels.
Here's a better shot ...

And here are the 5 colour ways I've chosen to have printed:

Happy passover / easter / whatever you are celebrating this month.

The tiniest quilt

I'm starting to get excited about Sew It Together coming up in a couple of months.

Sheridan has done an amazing job organising all the logistics and some amazing sponsors.

And Gypsy has organised a name-tag swap. Fun!!!

In the 'sewing' spirit of things, I have made my secret partner a tiny little quilt to use as her name tag.
Complete with mitred binding and everything!!

The name has been obscured to keep my partner in the dark.

For the letter stitching, I used Kirsty's stem stitch technique.

With a safety pin fastener at the back.

So very tiny but lots of fun to make.

Hope you like it  %$^*&&#.

Meet Pearl

When I was a young girl, I was totally into dressing up, fabulous thrifted outfits and making stuff.
Surprise, surprise!!

So when I turned 12 (my Bat-Mitzvah year), my siblings wanted to get me a special gift.
The thing I wanted more than anything in the world was a mannequin to show off the girly stuff in my room.

So, I got Pearl (so named because of her earliest accessory choices).

Here she is modelling a fabulous selection of necklaces (including my favourite pasta necklace made by Jake) and a bag I just made for my neice who is currently into wearing "olive".

And here's the other side of the bag ...

and the inside pocket ...

complete with a 'patchandi' label.

For those of you interested in how I do my labels, check out this great tutorial.

Have a stitchin' Thursday.

Tutorials in Wonderland

Made myself a Biscornu pincushion today using this tutorial.

Fabric is from the Wonderland range by MoMo.

Also using the same fabrics (2 charm packs and a jelly roll plus some linen from Amitie), I made this quilt top .....

Now I just need to baste, quilt and bind. No biggie!!

Aaaaargh!!!

Also, I made another one of these for another gift .....

A couple of people have asked me for a tutorial on this one. It's in the pipelines but I haven't yet perfected the method.
Need to make a couple more, me thinks.

(What is the ettiquette for offering a tutorial for something that wasn't your idea in the first place?)

On the back, I gave it a label .... (Sorry about the blurry shot).

To make the label, I used this tutorial that I found via Bec's blog.

That's all for now.

I'm off to bed.

Happy stitchin'.
